Early Terry History
II. History From l600 to say, 1640, a man named Terry lived in London, England. He was a goldsmith. He had three sons…… The goldsmith’s boys were Thomas Terry, aged 28, Robert Terry aged 25, and Richard Terry, aged 17. They embarked in the James from London, England for 13, 1635. They settled Long Island in l640 (five years later ). Thomas and Richard both settled Southhold and Robert settled Flushing. Nothing is known about Robert, the middle one, after 1670, when he was at Flemish. Richar’s will, made when he was 57 years old and dated July 6, l675, names five sons, five daughters and his brother, Thomas. Now we notice Thomas is a family name handed down from father to son.
Now a space separates our line down to John Terry, who was born 1763, of 156 years, which we have not found names to connect.
My father’s youngest brother, my uncle William Henry Terry, lives in Camden, New Jersey, 820 Carpenter Street. Wille visiting at his house I copied from the Old Family Bible the record of John Terry, my great-grand father. This Bible was bought by my grand-father Terry April 1, 1821. It reads as follows: “John Terry, my father, was born March 25, 1763. Died September l6, l824 aged 61 years, 5 months, 22 days. Mother, (our great grandmother) died September 15, 1826,” It does not tell her name, or when or where she was born. But Judging from the Bible, which was printed in New York in the year1803, they were born in America. It also contains in the same handwriting the family record, as follows “Thomas Terry (Our Gandfather). was born July 3rd, 1789. Wed about the middle of August, 1851. Mary Ann Mirkins, (his wife) was bom August 24, 1800. Died December 13, 1871 at a place called Chestnut Island, between Monroeville and Elmer, Salmon County, New Jersey.”
“Elizabeth Terry was bom Jun 22, l818 and died at Gloucester, Camden County, New Jersey May 26, 1871. She was not married but lived with her mother. “David Terry was born October 15, 1820. Died Springfield, Illinois Jun 27, 1870. Rebecca Terry was born May 4, 1825. She married John Morton and lived somewhere in Missouri.”
“Thomas Searles Terry was born October 3rd, 1825. Deid at Enterprise, Utah August 22, 1920. Mirkins Terry, bom June 10, 1828. Luther Martin Terry was born October 23rd, 1830. John Wesley Terry was born July 3rd, 1833 and died young. William Henry Terry, was September 2nd, 1841. Died in New Jersey.”
